Summer League Recap: Warriors 76, Portland 90

The debut of this year's Warriors Summer League squad showed signs of what's in store for the Warriors this year. Ike Diogu, Andris Biedrins, Zarko Cabarkapa, Monta Ellis, and Chris Taft all contributed. Although the game ended in a disappointing loss, Diogu played extremely well. One of the glaring problems was a lack of ability to put the ball in the basket as they shot only 37.9%. Another problem? DEFENSE. The Blazers shot 50.8%. Put a hand up or something.

Forward Ike Diogu, making his first appearance in a Golden State uniform, scored a team-leading 16 points and grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds as the Warriors succumbed to the Trailblazers, 90-76, in their first game in the Reebok Vegas Summer League on Friday afternoon. Diogu tallied 11 of his 16 points in the second half, highlighted by an eye-catching one-handed rebound dunk off a miss by Monta Ellis in the fourth quarter. Ellis, who was selected by the Warriors in the second round of the 2005 NBA Draft, started at shooting guard for Golden State and added 15 points and six rebounds. Sebastian Telfair scored a game-high 23 points for Portland.

The Warriors sprinted out to a 28-20 lead after the first quarter on the strength of a trio of three-pointers by free agent Damir Miljkovic. However, after entering halftime with a scant four point lead (43-39), the Warriors were outscored 51-31 in the second half and shot only .294 from the floor (10-of-34) following intermission. Both the Warriors (18-of-32) and Trailblazers (22-of-35) shot poorly from the free throw line in a game that featured a total of 66 fouls.

In addition to Diogu and Ellis, Golden State's other draft night acquisition, Chris Taft, played well, netting five points (2-of-3 FGs) and four rebounds. Zarko Cabarkapa and Andris Biedrins - who joined Diogu, Ellis and free agent point guard Marque Perry in the starting lineup - added nine and seven points, respectively, for the Warriors.
